To put it simply, a cloud computing system allows you to store and access programs and data via the internet rather than your computer’s hard drive. When you work off a hard drive, everything is physically close and accessible from that particular computer or any other computer on the local network. When you work off a cloud, however, everything is easily accessible from anywhere you are, provided you have an internet connection.

There are different types of cloud computing which provide different services:

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) – This provides you with raw computing hardware over the internet such as servers or storage. An example of IaaS is ordinary web hosting, which is used for serving up files for your website from the servers.

Software as a Service (SaaS) – This provides you with access to application software of which the installation, setup, and running is arranged by your provider. Examples of SaaS are Microsoft Office 365, Google Apps, and other online applications.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) – This provides you with computer platforms that allow you to develop applications via web-based tools. Google App Engine and Windows Azure are good examples of PaaS.
